So You Have A New Furry Edition To Your Family?

Congratulations on adopting your new furry family member!

Below is some information to set your new furbaby up for stress free grooming throughout their lifetime.

Cherish the exciting milestones and stages of puppyhood ahead!

When do I start getting my puppy groomed?

I suggest that your puppy should receive a minimum of two doses of the Nobivac DHP/DHPPi vaccine, which offers adequate protection against Canine Parvovirus. This virus spreads easily through direct contact from contaminated objects or environments.

Additionally, it's important a bond has been established between pup and owner and the pup is comfortably acclimated to your home.

What can I do at home?

Make a point of touching your puppies feet, including nails and pads often to desensitise them to this sensation.

Do short brushing sessions often and reward them with their favourite treats.

What is the process?

It is recommended your pups first visit to Groomville be short, as young pups get tired and have short attentions spans.

Before we commence we let your new pup sniff around, take a few treats and have a cuddle. Bringing their favourite toy with them can also be useful.

Then the owner leaves their pup with the groomer to get acquainted and build a rapport.

We do a little nail clip, a warm bath with gentle puppy shampoo and calmly and slowly blow dry the coat.

Three introductory sessions 3 - 4 weeks apart are highly recommended.

With each grooming session, I will introduce new parts to the groom, eventually building to a full groom.

What can I expect?

Grooming can be a truly immersive experience for a young puppy. They encounter new people, unfamiliar places, and different scents. Additionally, they must adapt to the water, loud sounds, the vibration of clippers, the sensation of nail trimming, and the challenge of remaining still for what may feel like an eternity.

It's essential to ensure these experiences are positive and that the puppy is not overwhelmed to the point of distress. If they perceive grooming as a negative experience, it could leave a lasting impression, making future grooming sessions difficult.

With all this mind, your puppies first few grooms may not be perfectly to your liking but it is important to understand that building confidence takes time, therefore perfection can be a work in progress.
